Carl Rogers was a Psychologist and theorist in the early 1900’s. He differed from Freud and thought he held a pessimistic view of humans. He was President of the American Psychological Assoc. and developed a humanistic Psychology approach vs. a Self-actualization approach that Freud had had. Rogers believed were not bad and fueled by sexual and aggressive thoughts. He felt people were good inside, and born that way. Rogers believed relationships should be equal, including parent-child relationships. The three components of Rogers client centered therapy include, Congruency, or genuiness. Therapists need to be sincere, authentic as it builds trust. Therapists must also offer unconditional positive support and empathy for another. You may have not went through their experience but you can understand and empathize. You can use Rogers theories in your own life to create a more self fulfilling life and filling it with wonderful experiences.
